Overview:

The TV News Photographer has a keen eye for capturing compelling visuals and technical expertise to produce high-quality video content. They work closely with reporters and producers to cover news stories, events, and features, ensuring that all footage is visually engaging and meets the highest journalistic standards. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed to meet team or company objectives.

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Filming: Film high-quality audio & video for news stories, features, and live broadcasts. Ensure all footage is visually compelling and accurately represents the story being told.
  • Field Work: Travel to various locations to cover news events, including breaking news, press conferences, community events, and feature stories. Work in various weather conditions and environments.
  • Technical Operation: Operate and maintain camera equipment, including cameras, lenses, tripods, lights, and microphones. Ensure all equipment is in good working condition and handle basic troubleshooting when necessary.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with reporters, producers, and other newsroom staff to plan and execute news coverage. Provide input on story development and visual storytelling techniques.
  • Editing: Edit video footage to create polished news packages and features. Use video editing software to ensure smooth transitions, appropriate pacing, and high production quality.
  • Live Shots: Set up and operate live shots, including the use of live transmission equipment & lighting. Coordinate with the control room and on-air talent to ensure seamless live broadcasts.
  • Visual Storytelling: Use creative techniques to enhance storytelling, such as framing, composition, and lighting. Capture b-roll and additional footage to support news stories.
  • Safety and Ethics: Adhere to safety guidelines and journalistic ethics while capturing footage. Ensure all content is accurate, fair, and respects the privacy and dignity of subjects.
  • Time Management: Meet tight deadlines and manage time effectively while covering multiple assignments. Ensure timely delivery of footage to the newsroom.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience as a news photojournalist.
  • Knowledge of non-linear editing, EDIUS is a plus.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills.
  • Must be adaptable and flexible with changes in a fast-paced environment.
  • Be willing to learn and adapt to new technologies and news gathering methods.
  • Experience in operating microwave & satellite trucks.
  • Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • Be willing to relocate for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of EDIUS editing.
  • LiveU Experience.
  • Understanding of digital trends and video traits.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to work in challenging environments. Will be filming news during weather events, fires, crashes, and other newsworthy coverage.
  • Must be able to move quickly inside and outside on uneven, unfamiliar terrain, and stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift, carry and move with up to 50lbs in many environments including outdoors and in extreme weather conditions.
  • Must be able to travel on assignment and possess a wide range of technical skills, to include operation of live trucks, expert editing skills, using backpack live units and the ability to troubleshoot on the fly.
