Position Overview

The Senior Producer for Primetime Newscasts is a key editorial and leadership role within the WRAL newsroom, responsible for producing the 11:00 p.m. newscast and providing oversight of the 10:00 p.m. newscast. This role is designed for an emerging newsroom leader who thrives in a fast-paced, breaking news environment and is driven to elevate nightly coverage through strong editorial judgment, innovative storytelling, and team leadership.

This individual leads the evening newscast team with a focus on urgency, accountability journalism, and content depth—digging for new elements in developing stories while ensuring alignment with WRAL’s content strategy. The Senior Producer works in close coordination with digital and WRAL News+ teams to deliver a seamless multiplatform experience, with the goal of making WRAL’s late news the most watched and most trusted news product in Raleigh.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Management

· Lead and manage the evening newscast team, including producers, reporters, and photographers.

· Serve as the editorial leader during evening hours, setting clear expectations for coverage, tone, and execution.

· Coach and mentor producers and reporters to strengthen writing, storytelling, and live presentation skills.

· Foster a culture of urgency, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Newscast Production & Oversight

· Produce the 11:00 p.m. newscast with strong editorial structure, pacing, and execution.

· Provide editorial oversight and guidance for the 10:00 p.m. newscast to ensure consistency and quality.

· Build rundowns that prioritize breaking news, enterprise reporting, and WRAL’s content cornerstones.

· Ensure clear, compelling writing and seamless transitions throughout the broadcast.

· Maintain high production standards under tight deadlines.

Breaking News Leadership

· Lead real-time editorial decision-making during breaking news situations.

· Pivot coverage quickly, adding new elements, live components, and updated information as stories evolve.

· Coordinate across teams to ensure immediate, accurate, and impactful coverage on all platforms.

· Drive urgency in storytelling, ensuring viewers understand what is new, what is changing, and what is next.

Editorial Judgment & Accountability

· Uphold WRAL’s standards for accuracy, fairness, and ethical journalism.

· Ensure all major stories include a clear accountability angle when appropriate.

· Push for deeper reporting by asking critical questions and identifying gaps in coverage.

· Elevate enterprise and investigative content within nightly broadcasts.

Multiplatform Integration

· Work in coordination with digital and WRAL News+ teams to align content across TV, WRAL.com, streaming, YouTube, and social platforms.

· Ensure broadcast stories are optimized for digital distribution and audience engagement.

· Contribute to a “new, now, next” content approach across platforms.

· Collaborate on extended coverage opportunities, including streaming and digital-first storytelling.

Content Strategy & Innovation

· Execute WRAL’s content strategy with a focus on key cornerstones such as accountability reporting, consumer, safety, and enterprise journalism.

· Identify opportunities to differentiate late news coverage through storytelling, exclusives, and live elements.

· Continuously seek ways to improve pacing, presentation, and viewer engagement.

· Use audience insights and newsroom feedback to refine content decisions.

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field preferred.

· Minimum 3–5 years of experience producing television newscasts in a fast-paced newsroom.

· Demonstrated leadership experience or readiness to step into a leadership role.

· Strong editorial judgment with a passion for breaking news and enterprise storytelling.

· Proven ability to produce high-quality newscasts under deadline pressure.

· Excellent writing, storytelling, and line-producing skills.

· Proficiency in newsroom systems, video editing tools, and digital platforms.

· Flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and breaking news coverage.

  • Standing for Meetings: Periodic standing during team briefings or while overseeing live broadcasts.
  • Stress Management: Ability to remain calm and focused during breaking news or high-pressure situations.
  • Multitasking: Simultaneously managing multiple tasks, including script adjustments, live updates, and team coordination.
