Maintains the stability and performance of large enterprise class mainframe computing systems. Monitors, tunes, and reports on z/OS performance and efficiency while collaborating and partnering across the entire organization and with vendor partners. Reviews Million Service Units per Second (MIPS) consumption within the Central Processor Complex, Logical Partitions (LPAR) (Virtual Machine), and addresses Space I level to adjust and meet business needs. Reviews and actively manages system memory usage for both LPARs and Coupling Facilities, submitting changes to effectively use resources. Analyzes Batch Performance and provides recommendations to meet batch Service Level Objectives (SLOs) and Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Primary Responsibilities:
- Monitors, analyses, and reports on utilization levels and business volumes.
- Forecasts and recommends provisioning of resources for mainframe processor and peripheral hardware components.
- Resolves and prevents performance issues and provides capacity planning services at the hardware, software, and business application levels.
- Assists the team in understanding and recommending optimal Disaster Recovery Performance/Capacity configurations.
- Provides technical support and reports for teams, users, and mainframe partners (on performance-related issues and capacity related requirements).
- Plans, forecasts, monitors, and tunes the capacity and performance of hardware, operating systems, storage devices, and applications to address applications and user service requirements.
- Reviews mainframe batch cycle runs to ensure timely ends, and adjusts capacity to meet SLAs.
- Provides projected mainframe capacity studies for new mainframes and/or capacity changes.
- Contributes towards implementing High Value Automation (HVA).
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Information Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and six (6) years of experience as a Director, Operating Systems Programming (or closely related occupation) tuning and capacity planning IBM mainframe z/OS platforms in a Sysplex environment across multiple sites, datacenters, and Business Units (BU).
Or, alternatively, Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Information Management, Business Administration, or a closely related field (or foreign education equivalent) and four (4) years of experience as a Director, Operating Systems Programming (or closely related occupation) tuning and capacity planning IBM mainframe z/OS platforms in a Sysplex environment across multiple sites, datacenters, and Business Units (BU).
Skills and Knowledge:
Candidate must also possess:
- Demonstrated Expertise (“DE”) building and coordinating performance databases and warehouses on z/OS or Linux environments by post-processing SMF, RMF WLM, Coupling Facility, and Direct Access Storage Devices (DASD) generated data on the IBM Mainframe platform.
- DE executing advanced analysis, performance modelling, capacity planning, and workload forecasting while setting Processor Resource/System Manager (PR/SM) weights and Logical Processor Allocations (LPARs) using hipper-dispatch algorithms on the z/OS platform; performing analysis and tuning for DASD and memory (Real Storage) in multiple Parallel Sysplex environments using SAS (Statistical Analysis Software), MXG (Merrills Expanded Guide), REXX (Restructured Extended Executor), SQL (Structured Query Language), and JCL (Job Control Language) mainframe software components.
- DE building fit for purpose dashboards in Grafana, Power BI, and Tableau using back-end relational databases (DB2, Postgres, or MySQL) to host mainframe performance data; and executing statistical analysis, automated data processing, and performance reporting using SAS or MXG, SAS GRAPH, and open-source tools (Python and R) -- with data processing packages (Pandas and Tidyverse).
- DE implementing IT Service Management (ITSM) practices including Incident Management, Change Management, Problem Management, and Service Now or JIRA to ensure a stable and predictable IT environment (to be managed using objective measures of Service Levels), with optimal performance and adequate application throughput.
