As an Engineering Manager within the Workplace Investing (WI) Platform organization, you will play a critical leadership role in modernizing Fidelity’s Workplace Investing managed account solution, Personalized Planning and Advice (PPA). You will lead the development of a cloud-native Managed Accounts platform, replace legacy systems and establish modern engineering practices at scale.
This is a hands-on engineering leadership role, requiring both technical depth and people leadership. You will contribute directly to architecture and implementation in the early stages while building and scaling a high-performing team. Over time, your focus will evolve toward organizational scale, technical strategy, and execution excellence, while maintaining strong technical credibility.
Scope and Impact
- Lead and grow a team of 8–15 engineers (FTE/ contractors) in a matrixed environment
- Own delivery of a strategic platform modernization initiative within WI
- Accountable for end-to-end engineering outcomes: design, build, quality, and production readiness
- Influence architecture, engineering standards, and delivery practices across teams
- Partner closely with Product and Architecture to shape roadmap and execution strategy
- Contribute to establishing AI-assisted and spec-driven engineering practices across the organization
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership and Delivery
- Own and drive end-to-end delivery of platform capabilities: from architecture and design through production and operations
- Act as a hands-on technical leader, contributing to design, code reviews, and critical implementation decisions
- Lead system decomposition, ensuring alignment with distributed and cloud-native patterns
- Ensure strong operational readiness: testing strategy, CI/CD pipelines, observability, and reliability
Technical Direction and Standards
- Establish and enforce engineering standards across the platform:
- Contract-first APIs
- CI/CD pipeline design
- Observability (logging, metrics, tracing)
- Code quality and review practices
- Evaluate and guide architectural decisions across services, integrations, and platform components
- Champion adoption of AI-assisted development tools and modern engineering practices
Team Leadership and Talent Development
- Build, mentor, and develop engineers and emerging technical leaders
- Create a culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement
- Drive hiring and team composition aligned with platform needs
- Provide coaching and performance feedback to improve individual and team effectiveness
Cross-Functional Leadership
- Partner with Product, Architecture, and enterprise teams to align priorities and execution
- Represent engineering in senior-level forums, communicating technical decisions and trade-offs
- Manage external dependencies and technical integrations across partner teams
Technical Depth
- 10 years of software engineering experience, including strong expertise in backend systems (Java/Spring or equivalent enterprise stack)
- Experience designing and building distributed, event-driven systems (Kafka, messaging, microservices)
- Hands-on experience with cloud-native platforms (Azure preferred), Kubernetes, and modern infrastructure practices
- Deep understanding of: API design and lifecycle management CI/CD pipelines and engineering automation
- Observability and production reliability
Leadership and Execution
- 3–5 years leading engineering teams, with clear ownership of delivery and technical direction
- Experience working in regulated, high-reliability environments (financial services or similar)
- Ability to navigate matrixed organizations and influence without direct authority
- Demonstrated ability to: Deliver complex systems from concept to production
- Balance short-term delivery with long-term platform evolution
- Make architectural and prioritization trade-offs
Preferred Experience
- Experience leading platform modernization or legacy transformation efforts
- Familiarity with AI-assisted engineering practices (e.g., code generation, spec-driven development)
- Experience scaling teams during early-stage platform buildout
- Background in financial services or fintech platforms
