Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students’ educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom/off campus aspects of student life at NCCU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services; student leadership; residential life; student activities; student conduct; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and campus ministry.
Recreation and Wellness provides a comprehensive co-curricular experience for North Carolina Central University Students. Housed in the Division of Student Affairs Recreation and Wellness is committed to providing programming to enhance the student experience while encouraging healthy habits. In addition Recreation and Wellness serves the university community in providing programs to support an active lifestyle on the campus. Recreation and Wellness supports programming in competitive sports, fitness, aquatics, and informal recreation.
Primary Purpose of Position
This position will oversee the operation and administration of the following programs: competitive sports, fitness and wellness, aquatics and outdoor programs while supervising three professionals.

The Assistant Director for Recreation Programs will report to the Associate Director of Recreation and Wellness and serve as a member of the senior departmental leadership team. This position is responsible for managing the Fitness & Wellness Programs, Eagle Venture (off-campus programming initiatives, e.g., teambuilding exercises, small group interaction, ropes courses), and providing support to overall management of the L.T. Walker Complex (Wellness Center), Aquatics/Swimming Pool and Outdoor Recreation Field. This position is responsible for collaborating with Academic Affairs to ensure proper maintenance of the pool and Wellness Center. The successful candidate will be committed to student development by providing an atmosphere that is conducive to learning. The individual will have oversight of student interns, work-study and student employees. The successful candidate is responsible for identifying potential partnerships to provide outdoor programming to the NCCU community. The ideal candidate will develop, implement, and supervise programs to include but not limited to; intramural sports, club sports, ESports (and other virtual gaming), and special events. The ideal candidate will develop, implement, and supervise programs to include but not limited to: group exercise, personal training, special programs, and management of the wellness center. The candidate is expected to collaborate with university partners on campus and represent the department on university wide committees.

Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree (MA) from an accredited college or university in Sports Management or related academic program with four years related experience and/or training in managing college recreation. A valid driver’s license is required.


Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation
Preferred Qualifications
CPR Instructor. First Aid Instructor. AED Instructor. Preferred CPO (certified pool operator) or AFO (aquatic facility operator) National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) active member.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Instructional
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  1. Provides leadership and supervises all programs (Aquatics and Outdoor, Competitive Sports, and Fitness and Wellness) within Recreation and Wellness.
  2. Assists the Director and Associate Director with budget development and budget management of all programs and special events within Recreation and Wellness.
  3. Assists the coordinators with establishing, implementing, and evaluating policies and procedures for the outdoor programs, group fitness, personal training, group training, club sports, intramural sports and esports
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  1. Plans, develops, implement and evaluate innovative wellness, fitness, competitive sports and outdoor programs based on industry trends and benchmarking.
  2. Tracks and appropriately log all incidents, accidents or issues within areas of oversight.
  3. Compiles comprehensive annual report – participations, impact, learning outcomes, etc.
  4. Attends meetings, events, trainings and serve on committees related to department, division or university mission and goals.
  5. Manages entire inventory control for Recreation and Wellness including equipment to order, writing bid specification with the assistance from Associate Director and Director.
  6. Performs other duties as assigned.
Function Administrative

Oversees the recruitment, hiring, supervision, training and evaluation of student staff including personal trainers, group fitness instructors, facility attendants, lifeguards, interns and practicum students.
