Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office for Career and Professional Development provides assistance to students and alumni through career services education and professional development through a multi-pronged approach.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Dean for Career and Professional Development serves as the leadership position in the unit. The Assistant Dean is responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive career services program for students and alumni of North Carolina Central University School of Law. The Assistant Dean develops and executes comprehensive programming for students in alumni in career education and professional development. The Assistant Dean also seeks to broaden and deepen relationships with employers and to develop additional marketing outreach strategies to the constituent groups. The Assistant Dean provides professional development counseling to students and alumni via direct individual counseling and group programs. The Assistant Dean is responsible for collection of employment data and other reporting needs for compilation of statistical requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must have a thorough knowledge of university academic structures, programs and the historical framework of North Carolina Central University. Knowledge of career services, financial record-keeping, and student records.
Minimum Education/Experience
Must have a J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and a license to practice law. Significant experience in career services, student services or administration within a higher education setting is required. Previous supervisory experience of professional and student staff is highly desirable.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Must develop a dynamic and broad array of services that supports each student’s legal career path.

Serves as law school liaison to the National Association of Law Placement (NALP).

Supervises and collects data in compliance with NALP, ABA, and AALS reporting.

Serves on the Scholarship committee and various Law School and University committees as assigned.

Develops and maintains relationships with national and local bar organizations in order to create opportunities for our students.

Solicits and nurtures new relationships with prospective employers, including alumni.

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

Advises students on interviewing techniques.

Advises students on job search strategies.

Presents individual workshop and seminars on resume preparation.

Counsels students on all issues relevant to conducting an effective job search.

Coordinates on-campus interview program with law firms, corporations, state and federal government agencies, public interest organizations, judges, district attorneys, public defenders, and military judge advocate general’s corps.

Supervises Director of Legal Recruitment, Director of Public Service Programs and Career Services Office Manager
Supervises work-study students as requested or assigned.

Maintains the Career and Professional Development Office’s internal website.

Leads the communication and marketing efforts for the office.
