Position Overview
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Division of Student Affairs fosters student growth and development. The Division of Student Affairs aids, directs and informs students about services and programs that will expand students’ educational experiences and prepare them for diverse lives in local and global communities. The Division of Student Affairs is responsible for many of the outside the classroom aspects of student life at NCCU, including student engagement and leadership; career services; student disability services; student leadership; residential life; student activities; student conduct; special programs and services; student health & counseling services and campus ministry.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Dean of Students at NCCU serves as a vital resource and advocate for a diverse community comprising students, faculty, staff, parents/families, and external partners. This role is integral in fostering student resiliency and success through leading robust outreach initiatives and collaborative efforts. The Assistant Dean also provides strategic direction and guidance in managing non-clinical student case management, contributing to policy development, and overseeing administrative functions within the Dean of Students’ office. Moreover, the role addresses an array of student concerns encompassing physical and mental health, adjustment issues, safety, crises within personal or family realms, and seamless integration into campus life.

The Assistant Dean manages and coordinates the operations of key student-focused initiatives such as the T.R.U. Eagles Initiative, further amplifying efforts to fortify student welfare and holistic development. Through proactive engagement and strategic coordination, this role champions a supportive environment conducive to fostering student well-being and thriving experiences within the university community.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The Assistant Dean plays a crucial role in fostering student resilience and success, managing non-clinical student case management, contributing to policy development, and overseeing administrative functions within the Dean of Students’ office.

Key skills include in-depth knowledge of community-based mental health, expertise in crisis intervention, and a keen understanding of the challenges faced by young adults. Strong oral and written communication abilities are crucial. The role requires effective interpersonal skills for collaboration across various university departments, conflict management capabilities, and adaptability in working hours, including availability during weekends and crises. This role is central to fostering student success and resilience, handling non-clinical student case management, responding appropriately in crisis situations, contributing to policy-making, and overseeing administrative tasks within the Dean of Students’ office. The selected candidate will have strong skills in computer use and related software.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Counseling, Social Work or related field
  • At least three years of experience in higher education and previous experience working with individuals with mental health challenges and/or in crisis response

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative

· Contribute to the formulation and implementation of policies that support student welfare and success within the university environment.
· Provide strategic direction in non-clinical student case management, establishing guidelines and procedures to ensure effective support mechanisms for students.
· Oversee administrative functions within the Dean of Students’ office, including budget management, para-professional personnel coordination, and resource allocation.
· Utilize and manage relevant software and technological tools to facilitate administrative tasks, data management, and communication within the office and across departments.
· Assist in developing assessment and data collection plans

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
· Manage and coordinate key student-focused initiatives like the T.R.U. Eagles Initiative, overseeing logistics, timelines, and objectives to amplify their impact.
· Serve as a member of University committees related to student welfare and other aspects related to student life
· Develop and facilitate campaigns, workshops, training sessions, and other programming on crisis management and prevention of behaviors that may contribute to crisis situations
· Identify opportunities to collaborate with internal and external partners to improve the student experience
· Provide support to other key initiatives within and connected to the Office of the Dean of Students
· Provide support to the University community as a member of the Critical Response team
· Serve as a member of the Sexual Assault Response Team
· Serve as the chair of the Behavioral Intervention Team

Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
· Provide early intervention and behaviorally based assessments to determine appropriate resources and referrals to campus and community resources
· Assist in the coordination of Student Affairs response to major crisis and other unusual events within the University community
· Formulate intervention plans designed to minimize and/or resolve challenges
· Initiate parental contact when appropriate
· Guide students to applicable University and community resources
· Periodically review prior cases to verify compliance and/or case closure
· Maintain factual case records and prepare necessary statistical reports
· Maintain a directory of community resources available to students
· Respond to and engage in occasional weekend activities to include campus emergencies, addressing student needs, and attending university-related events.
· Serve on an on-call duty rotation
