Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The Assistant Director for PC TRIO Upward Bound Program is a crucial resource for developing underrepresented and underserved students. This role shares the responsibilities for the daily operation of the Upward Bound Program while providing leadership, mentoring, advising, and programming for students. This individual offers support and guidance to ensure academic and social success while promoting the positive effects of seeking college degree attainment. The Assistant Director is supervised by the Director and will assist in carrying out the long-term goals for the PC TRIO Upward Bound Program. Other responsibilities include performing a variety of professional and administrative duties that facilitate the day to- day operations of a function, program, and/or department. Assists in program planning and development; interprets, monitors, and analyzes information regarding operating policies and procedures; administers budgets; and coordinates academic and/or staff personnel matters. Resolves problems that have a significant impact on the overall goals of the department. |

Primary Purpose of Position | The Person County (PC) TRIO Upward Bound Program at North Carolina Central University is a U.S. Department of Education federally funded TRIO Program. North Carolina Central University will increase the number of underrepresented, low-income, and first-generation high school students from Person High School who graduate high school and obtain a college degree. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | Knowledge of and/or experience working in a TRIO program or grant-funded federal educational programs work experience, and knowledge of collegiate procedures; Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming economic, social, and academic barriers similar to the students; Administrative experience, grant management, and recruitment experience required; Public relations skills and personal qualities of integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness. |
Minimum Education/Experience | Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field required. |

Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function. | • Identify, recruit, and select program participants. • Manage academic & college prep programming for UB Project. • Collaborate with Target School Teachers/Counselors to ensure student success. • Work with Directors to recruit, hire, train, and supervise Skill-Building Instructors. • Collaborate with Institutional Campus Partners to aid in providing service to students. • Coordinate Academic Workshops on topics including course selection, study strategies, etc. • Serve on Institutional Committees to increase awareness, notoriety, and success of the project. • Aid in managing UB Student Database to ensure accurate and up-to-date record keeping for APR. • Facilitate coaching and counseling with program participants to ensure high school graduation and college enrollment. • Work with project staff to coordinate college tours, academic support groups, and academic scholarship opportunities. • Work with Seniors and Juniors to ensure ACT/SAT registration & testing, FAFSA Completion, and College Application Submissions. • Monitor all UB program participants’ academic progress and work with UB staff to administer academic intervention plans where appropriate. |
