Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Provost is responsible for all matters pertaining to academic programs. This includes oversight of academic program planning, the quality and delivery of instruction, strategic budgetary planning and collaborative research initiatives. The Office of the Provost is also responsible for all recruitment initiatives and matters associated with enrollment management. Additionally, this office fosters opportunities for student success through academic advising, coaching, and mentoring.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide support to help undergraduate students develop skills, behaviors, and habits that contribute to success in college. The Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching works to foster persistence and completion by identifying, tracking, mentoring, and providing interventions to students identified as having an increased likelihood of attrition. The Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching also provides leadership to the overall model and strategies for Academic Coaching at NCCU by assessing student needs, developing an individualized success plan and connecting students with services such as tutoring, the university counseling center, student health services, and when needed, outside agencies. The Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching assists in assessing the services and monitors student progress and unit goals. This position will focus on services dedicated to low-income students enrolled at NCCU, in need of academic support resources and individualized supports.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The successful candidate for the Coordinator of Academic Success Coaching position must:

· Demonstrate the ability to gather and interpret data, and prepare report;
· Possess knowledge of first and second-year students, and transfer students

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred. At least two years of academic advising or coaching experience (preferably in a higher education setting).

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Designs and implements small and large-scale initiatives and programming tailored toward low-income students to enhance student learning, academic skill building, and relevant success tools (i.e. time management, test-taking, organization, etc.)
  • Collaborates with the Office of the Provost, Dean of Students, Scholarships & Student Aid, University College and other key offices to establish and track programmatic metrics and outcomes;
  • Leads campus initiatives for Academic Success Coaching including implementation of technology, professional development, university policy review, identifying opportunities and strategies to increase retention and engage students, and creation of student success resources for students and staff.
Function Administrative

  • Provides Academic Success Coaching meetings via walk-in and scheduled appointments;
  • Assists students with understanding their degree requirements, campus resources, academic policies and procedures such as the academic calendar, course withdrawals, attendance, and assists with student’s progression to good academic standing;
  • Maintains accurate documentation of interactions and outreach in accordance with established expectations for University record keeping of student interactions


Function Administrative
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Collaborates with Enrollment Management to identify students at high risk for attrition (Pell-Eligible, First Generation, low HS GPA, etc.) that would benefit from Academic Coaching or Success Tutoring and engages in targeted outreach;
  • Hosts an ongoing series of listening sessions with select cohorts of first-generation, low-income and rural students to give students an opportunity to provide feedback on their academic and campus engagement experiences
  • Participates in campus programming and partner with other units on campus in developing and implementing proactive retention strategies for at-risk students.
Function Administrative

  • Identify, track, mentor, and provide interventions to including proactive coaching to a cohort of fifty (50) low-income students
  • Refers students to the appropriate campus resource or personnel and collaborates accordingly to monitor the academic progress and holistic development of referred students;
  • Assists students with academic support needs, including reviewing course work requirements as listed in the syllabus and setting success plans to facilitate unsatisfactory academic progress;
  • Provides intervention to students on caseload identified as high risk based on early alert mechanisms including early warning, mid-term reporting, and review of final grades.

  • Participates in regularly scheduled campus and/or departmental staff meetings and events;
  • Serves on various committees on campus to ensure University College is represented and engaged with campus partners.
