Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The NCCU Department of Athletics’ primary purpose is to provide leadership for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program. The NCCU Department of Athletics places the highest priority on a quality academic and athletic experience as part of the overall education of student-athletes. |
Primary Purpose of Position | This Instructor-Tutor-Counselor will serve as the Program Coordinator for the Preparing to Soar Program. He/She is responsible for recruiting program participants, developing the summer program, working collaboratively with residential life and academic department to implement a successful living and learning community, and monitoring the participants’ progress towards degree completion. The Counselor-Tutor reports to the Coordinator of Student Athlete Academic Support Services in the University College. The Instructor- Tutor-Counselor for the University College is responsible for providing support to undergraduate student athletes who need academic assistance to supplement classroom instruction. For each student athlete seeking assistance, the Instructor- Tutor-Counselor assesses student’s needs, develops an individualized program and, coordinates services such as tutorials and programs offered by the University College, Department of Athletics and other departments across the campus. The Instructor- Tutor-Counselor develops an individualized student success plan, assists the student in accessing the services, and monitors the student’s progress. The Instructor-Tutor-Counselor refers the student to tutorials, supplemental instruction, and other programs offered by the University College, as well as the University Counseling Center, Student Health Services, and when needed, outside agencies. He/She is responsible for monitoring each student’s progress towards accomplishing the goals in the student’s success plan. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | The successful candidate for the Counselor-Tutor Position must: Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; Possess superior organizational skill; Demonstrate an ability to keep accurate and consistent records; Possess knowledge of best instructional practices, and student success models; Demonstrate an ability to work with diverse learners to ensure their success; Demonstrate the ability to work independently, and with team members; Possess the ability to effectively evaluate student outcomes and staff; Demonstrate an ability to utilize technology; Demonstrate the ability to gather and interpret data, and prepare reports; Possess knowledge of first and second year students, and transfer students; and Possess a willingness to work nights and some weekends. |
Minimum Education/Experience | Undergraduate Degree required. Preferred candidate will possess a Master’s Degree, with a minimum of three years’ experience working with college retention programs, and two years in a counseling setting. |

They will serve as the primary advisor for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), coordinating leadership opportunities and community engagement initiatives. The role includes planning and executing key events such as student-athlete celebrations and awards, guest speaker sessions, and life skills workshops covering topics like time management, mental health, NIL education, and financial literacy. In addition, the Coordinator will establish strategic partnerships with campus departments such as Student Affairs, Office of Community Engagement, Career Services, Student Life, and Counseling to maximize available resources and enhance student-athlete support. They will also be responsible for tracking and evaluating student-athlete participation and learning through surveys, reports and assessment tools. |
