| Primary Function of Organizational Unit | Student Health Services provides student-centered medical and wellness services which are affordable and accessible. Utilizes a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to wellness and health care. Provides an environment of inclusion, respect, and appreciation of diversity. Student Health Services is responsible for providing primary health care to the student campus community in a professional, competent caring, and confidential manner. SHS is committed to: providing reasonably comprehensive ambulatory medical services to all eligible students; promoting disease prevention through health education; providing non- classroom health education on issues that impact the student both physically and psychologically; provide ancillary support services (i.e. laboratory, pharmacy, and administrative); providing advisory, collaborative, and educational assistance to other university departments; and ensuring staff competency to support and fulfill this mission. | Primary Purpose of Position | The primary purpose of the position is to deliver primary health care to students. The scope of practice includes diagnosis and treatment of a broad scope of medical illness as well as recognition and referral of psychological and major medical and surgical illness. Provides counseling with regards to health promotion and disease prevention. May supervise, teach, and evaluate students and other medical staff. Provides clinical knowledge to health-related queries from faculty and staff. A Nurse Practitioner, or Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, is responsible for handling patient appointments and performing routine examinations to ensure patient health. Their duties include speaking with their patients about healthy lifestyle choices for their age, completing diagnostic tests to help diagnose and treat patients for injuries or illnesses and coordinating with other healthcare professionals to maintain updated medical records. This position will obtain information through medical histories and perform physical examinations; order and interpret diagnostic studies such as lab work, x-rays and EKGs; diagnose, treat and monitor acute and chronic health issues such as infections, minor injuries, hypertension, diabetes and asthma; perform minor office procedures such as incision and drainage, and suturing; counsel in nutrition, diet and weight control; counsel in stress management and substance abuse; collaborate and coordinate treatment plans with other disciplines and providers, and perform related duties as required. The work is performed in collaboration with a physician. This position will help prepare students academically, professionally and foster student growth development by providing preventative education, and physical and mental health services. |

| Minimum Education/Experience | Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” by the Joint Subcommittee. • Prefer 3+ years of experience as an APP and/or RN in Pediatrics. |
| Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation | Nurse Practitioners must obtain a license to practice in North Carolina. This licensure requires a master’s degree, a valid state Registered Nurse license and the completion of a national certification examination preferred completing the MSN or DNP degrees. Must have more than three years’ experience in outpatient clinical environment, primary care clinic, or Urgent Care setting. BLS Certification required. |
