Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Facilities Services Department reports directly to the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Facilities Management and is responsible for providing housekeeping services throughout NCCU campus.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of this position is to provide routine housekeeping and custodial services to maintain clean, safe, and sanitary University buildings and facilities. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, and waxing floor surfaces; cleaning and sanitizing bathrooms; replenishing paper products and soap supplies; emptying trash receptacles; moving furniture; performing high and low dusting; and cleaning custodial equipment. The position may also assist with snow and ice removal during inclement weather and other facility-related duties as needed. In addition, the position provides custodial support for special University events and functions, including commencement, convocation, homecoming, and other campus activities, to ensure facilities are properly prepared and maintained.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Working knowledge of standard cleaning and housekeeping practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), including their purpose and proper use in maintaining a safe housekeeping environment.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical work, including frequent bending, stooping, lifting, and other physical activities required to complete assigned duties.
  • Knowledge of and ability to safely operate custodial equipment, including buffers, carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, and wet vacuums.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities while maintaining quality and efficiency.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assigned tasks accurately and timely.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally and respectfully with a diverse range of individuals.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise initiative in completing assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team when necessary to accomplish departmental and University objectives.
Minimum Education/Experience
Some knowledge of cleaning procedures, ability to follow instructions and to perform medium to heavy physical work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special certification may be required for some of these positions.

Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies
Required Competency Knowledge - Technical
Duties
  • Review work schedules, assignments, and building diagrams to identify assigned work areas and report to designated locations in a timely manner.
  • Remove furniture and other items as necessary to prepare designated areas for floor cleaning and maintenance.
  • Perform basic floor care, including sweeping and dust mopping VCT (vinyl composition tile) floors in classrooms, offices, and hallways.
  • Prepare VCT floors for stripping and waxing by ensuring floor surfaces are properly cleaned and cleared of debris.
  • Vacuum all assigned carpeted areas prior to carpet extraction or bonnet cleaning.
  • Perform carpet cleaning and maintenance, including extraction or bonneting, as assigned.
  • Strip, wax, and maintain VCT flooring in accordance with established custodial procedures and standards.
  • Ensure VCT floors receive the prescribed number of coats of wax and that wax is applied correctly to maintain a clean and professional appearance.
  • Maintain custodial equipment in clean and working condition and ensure equipment is properly returned to assigned storage locations after use.
  • Follow established work schedules, safety procedures, and custodial standards to ensure the efficient and effective completion of assigned duties.
