Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Located within the North Carolina Central University Division of Student Affairs, Student Access & Success Programs is dedicated to providing proactive support services, accommodations, education, and training designed to increase postsecondary success for students who are first-generation, from limited-income households, and/or have documented disabilities.
The TRIO Student Support Services Teacher Preparation Program (SSS-TEACH) provides comprehensive academic, personal, and career support to eligible students majoring in education-related fields. Program services include academic advising, tutoring in education subjects, graduate school and research preparation, financial literacy education, and exposure to education career pathways.
The program is committed to promoting student persistence, retention, and graduation while supporting the development of a diverse and well-prepared education workforce. Through targeted services and individualized support, TRIO SSS-TEACH fosters academic success and educational attainment among traditionally underrepresented students pursuing careers in education.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Associate Director of the TRIO STEM Success Program (SSS-STEM) provides leadership and administrative oversight for the academic, operational, and compliance functions of the program, which is designed to promote the persistence, retention, and graduation of first-generation, limited-income, and/or students with disabilities pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. Reporting to the Executive Director for Student Access & Success, the Associate Director supervises professional staff and student employees and supports the effective planning, implementation, and delivery of comprehensive student support services.
The position is responsible for ensuring compliance with applicable federal regulations, program requirements, data reporting standards, and institutional policies. The Associate Director also manages budgetary processes, supports strategic planning, and contributes to the assessment and continuous improvement of program services. This role requires strong leadership, accountability, and sound operational oversight, as the Associate Director directly contributes to the program’s ability to achieve federally mandated performance objectives, institutional goals, and student success outcomes for traditionally underrepresented students in STEM disciplines.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of and two years of experience working with low-income, first-generation students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with financial aid processing, postsecondary admissions, proposal writing and operations.
  • Knowledge of computer-based data management systems.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience as an administrator of federal grant related programs.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of staff supervision and budget management experience.
  • Knowledge and/or experience working in a collegiate environment.
  • Proven fiscal management skills and budgetary experience.
  • Familiarity with college admissions and financial aid requirements.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Ability to effectively present information to groups of administrators, staff, teachers, students and the community.
Minimum Education/Experience
  • Master’s Degree in STEM, Education, Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, or a related field

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
Function Leadership, Administration & Operations
Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.
  • Supervise the Program Coordinator, Graduate Student Coordinator, and tutors/coaches, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluation.
  • Oversee the planning and delivery of STEM-focused academic enrichment, mentoring, and professional development workshops.
  • Ensure program compliance with TRIO regulations, EDGAR, and institutional policies through accurate record-keeping and eligibility verification.
  • Support the Director in programmatic budget oversight, including monitoring expenditures, preparing fiscal reports, and maintaining accountability of program resources.
  • Develop and implement operational systems to ensure program efficiency and adherence to performance standards.
  • Contribute to grant writing, proposals, and reporting to strengthen program sustainability.
Function Student Services & Advising

  • Maintain a caseload of SSS-STEM participants and provide academic, financial, and career counseling tailored to STEM majors.
  • Oversee Coordination of tutoring, coaching, and mentoring assignments, ensuring high-quality academic and professional interventions.
  • Support participants in navigating STEM course sequencing, research/internship opportunities, and preparation for graduate or professional school.
  • Provide individualized support for financial aid processes, including FAFSA completion, scholarship searches, and financial literacy.
  • Refer students to campus partners and external STEM resources.
Function Data Management, Compliance & Evaluation

  • Direct data collection, documentation, and reporting through Blumen and university systems.
  • Monitor student progress toward program objectives and degree completion, creating evaluation tools and dashboards for continuous improvement.
  • Lead preparation of compliance documents, performance reports, and Annual Performance Report (APR) data submission.
Function Campus Collaboration, Outreach & Recruitment

  • Represent the TRIO STEM Success Program at campus events, orientations, and external outreach initiatives.
  • Collaborate with STEM faculty, academic advisors, Financial Aid, Career Services, and research offices to coordinate holistic support for participants.
  • Assist with the development and delivery of recruitment presentations to attract eligible STEM students into the program.
  • Support marketing, public relations, and communication strategies for program visibility.
Function Professional Development
