| Primary Function of Organizational Unit | The North Carolina Central University Police Department is open 24 hours a day and the campus is patrolled, 365 days a year by sworn police officers and security officers. The primary objective of the University Police Department is to provide a safe and secure environment within which students, faculty, and staff can live, learn, and work. The University Police Department enforces all applicable federal, state, and local laws. The department is organized with up to 35 sworn law enforcement officers, 16 security officers, and 9 administrative staff (e.g., telecommunicators, civilian administrative support, etc.). All sworn officers are professionally trained and must be certified by the state of North Carolina to have the same authority and right to bear arms and arrest as any law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina. The department provides a full range of police services, including, but not limited to, investigating all crimes committed in and around its jurisdiction, making arrests, providing crime prevention/community services programs, enforcing traffic laws, and maintaining crowd control and safety for campus special events. Campus security and safety is realized through an active partnership involving officers, students, faculty, staff and the community. The department also maintains a close partnership with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in implementing and coordinating campus law enforcement operations. The University Police Department continues to review and upgrade, as needed, its standards, equipment and training of personnel that includes incorporating knowledge of the University’s overarching mission, as a historically black university, and the role of diverse cultural sensitivity towards its students, constituents, and surrounding community. |
| Primary Purpose of Position | The primary purpose of this position is to provide supervisory law enforcement work. This position has the full power of arrest; the position has law enforcement authority ranging from traffic control to criminal investigations within a limited geographic jurisdiction. Work involves supervising a unit of officers; evaluating the positions evaluate appropriateness of officer responses; designating assignments; directing needed resources; and interpreting laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures. Other duties, but not limited to, orientation and training of officers, inspections of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, discipline, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning. |

| Minimum Education/Experience | A minimum of a bachelor’s degree or greater and 6 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience or an associate degree and 8 years of sworn law enforcement officer experience. At least 3 years of the experience requirement must have been in a supervisory role equivalent to a Police Sergeant or greater. Current certification from NC CJETSC as a commissioned police officer or certification eligible within an agency specified timeframe. |
