Job Description
The security officer supervisor (sergeant) is responsible for overseeing all security personnel, maintaining security and safety of people and property in assigned areas on the University’s campus by patrolling areas on foot, providing campus escorts and emergency transportation, directing traffic, securing buildings, and gates, enforcing university rules and regulations. Security Supervisors may be required to resolve minor conflicts and prevent crimes, prepare reports, and serve as effective professional role models to the subordinates, University students, and the community. Security Officers are distinguished from campus Police Officers in that incumbents do not carry firearms, write state citations, or arrest violators, and North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification is not required. Security Officers are expected to report highly unusual or suspicious criminal activity to sworn police officers for follow-up.

1. Completes all assigned duties by established deadlines and per established or defined protocols, policies, and procedures.
  • Act as a liaison between customers, security officers, Operations Commander, or Chief of Police.
  • Will supervise site staff and provide coaching, recognition, and discipline within the approved empowerment range.
  • Implement security policies, and procedures and conduct employee awareness training.
  • Address all aspects of security for the university, including physical security, investigations, security education and training, contingency planning, crisis management, and executive protection.
  • Review and complete security officer timesheets for timeliness and accuracy
  • Provides emergency and non-emergency assistance to emergency medical personnel and local law enforcement agencies on campus.
  • Effectively settles disputes, resolves conflicts, and/or negotiates with others while performing policing duties.
  • Identifies evidence and protects crime scenes.
  • Maintains physical condition qualifications that enable a rapid and effective response to emergencies.
  • Can use physical force when appropriate, to assist sworn law enforcement personnel, and as based on state and federal laws.
2. Apprises supervisor of issues that might impede timely completion of assigned duties and/or departmental projects.
  • Complete monthly reports related to the security personnel, ensure and review reports submitted by security officers, and conscientiously complete all shift-related duties in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Effectively composes comprehensive written records of incidents/complaints describing detailed information and action taken.
3. Exercises sound judgment and discretion at all times and maintains cooperative working relationships with both internal and external constituencies and co-workers.
  • Effectively directs and controls traffic and the parking of vehicles.
  • Provides directions and general information to guests and visitors.
  • Creates timely, accurate, and complete incident reports.
  • Scheduling of security personnel for daily assignments, special events, and off-duty events.
  • Provides an alert presence and a vigilant patrol of the campus buildings (Residential Halls) and grounds by the designated mode (foot, golf cart, or vehicle) to prevent and detect suspicious activity and potentially unsafe situations or conditions; gives special attention to areas of high crime incidents and high safety risks.
  • Diligently provides campus escorts for personal safety and security, medical transport, and motorist assistance.
  • Rapidly responds to alarms for intrusion, fire, and other related security needs.
  • Professionally represents the University to the internal campus community and the outside public.
4. Exhibits a willingness to perform other duties as requested or required efficiently and timely.
  • Actively seeks to establish and maintain effective relations with students, faculty, staff, the public, and other law enforcement officials.
  • Effectively builds a sense of ownership/partnership with the campus community in their mutual safety and security.
  • Effectively interacts with and establishes rapport with persons with varied cultural backgrounds and with disabilities.
  • Is proficient in the handling and use of issued weapons and equipment: ASP baton, pepper spray, and handcuffs.
5. Compliance with all policies and procedures as stipulated in the Employee Handbook.
  • Effectively maintains order and protects persons and property on campus, following established departmental procedures.
  • Appropriately applies knowledge of university policies and departmental procedures to arrive at a valid course of action.
  • All other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree (required)
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience in security
  • Customer service with the public, preferably as a security officer
  • Work effectively with a diverse population or group of community participants
  • Proactive identification of problems, the development and implementation of appropriate solutions
  • Quickly and calmly analyze emergencies and objectively determine the proper course of action.
  • Cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in recognizing the scope and application of authority.
  • Ability to work record management systems, camera systems, and two-way radio systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (preferred)
  • National Incident Management System (NIMS) knowledge
  • Experience in the following areas: Title IX, Clery, Accreditation, & Policy Writing
Physical Demands
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Ability to operate golf cart
  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
