Job Description:
The Commercial Loan Officer (LO) will be responsible for originating and closing commercial loans including assessing an applicant, financial analysis,
industry and market research, management capacity, and collateral, among other factors, to complete a loan transmittal for underwriting. The position will have a primary focus on loans for affordable housing, which often include construction and complex ownership and financing structures. The LO is responsible for ensuring that all loans conform to Self-Help’s underwriting policies. Critical to this role is the understanding of the value of teamwork and customer relationships as the LO will have direct contact with both internal and external customers and will work closely with other loan officers, sector leaders and underwriters to perform the principal duties
and responsibilities of this role.
Based on experience, this role may be filled at a more junior level.
What you'll do:
ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS
- Independently conducts industry, financial, and risk assessment analysis. Seeks guidance when needed.
- Identifies key credit issues and makes credit recommendations to decision-makers.
- Proposes appropriate loan terms in compliance with internal credit and program requirements.
- With support, navigates loan structuring topics, such as third-party guarantees, tax credits, or multiple sources in a capital stack.
- Demonstrates independent critical reading skills and accurate synthesis of information from third-party reports on environmental, market and collateral topics.
- Independently prepares the full credit memo, which is reviewed by underwriter, and oral presentation of loan request, communicating credit drivers.
- With support, prepares and negotiates loan proposals with borrowers and external partners
PROJECT AND PRIORITY MANAGEMENT
- Leads most processes with teams involved in loan underwriting, approval, closing, and post-closing
- Successfully serves as primary LO / manages several (~4-6) active loans (~2 in origination, ~2 in disbursement, ~2 in portfolio needing attention) at one time.
- Establishes deadlines and follows through to meet them; communicates promptly to teammates. Manages several competing priorities.
- Successfully manages portfolio of closed loans, including construction disbursements, modifications, servicing, and other portfolio needs.
- Understands and works to manage to the timing and needs of valuation, environmental, construction, legal, and servicing processes and teammates.
- Demonstrates skill of influencing without control.
RELATIONSHIP BUILDING AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
- Shows strong team player skills and demonstrated ability to consistently work effectively in a cooperative and diverse environment
- Provides good customer service, including prompt responses and basic technical assistance, to several (~4-6) active loans (~2 in origination, ~2 in disbursement, ~2 in portfolio needing attention) at one time.
- Builds rapport and relationships internally and externally to effectively accomplish the work and create repeat customers. Able to transfer relationships as needed.
INITIATIVE AND STANDARDS OF EXCELLENCE
- Is self-motivated to successfully complete assigned work and, when asked, occasionally volunteers for work in support of the team (e.g. retreat planning, process documentation, etc.).
- Consistently produces high quality work product. With coaching, works to improve quality and efficiency of work.
PRODUCTIVITY AND EFFECIENCY
- Leads origination work on 10 loans or $8M in total loan value or equivalent proportionate share of loan originations per year
- Proficient in multiple sectors / geographic locations or has expertise in one sector / geographic location
- Proficiently works more simply structured loans and developing proficiency in more complex structures, including a variety of loan sizes and collateral types.
What you'll need:
- Bachelor’s degree in related field OR equivalent related experience.
- 5 years of experience in in lending, finance, or community development OR equivalent related experience.
