Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety’s mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
Directs personnel involved in establishing, promoting, implementing, and maintaining the University’s safety and property security/protection programs. Serves as an ambassador in the campus community, building relationships and providing service to students, employees, and visitors.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
  • Directs activities of Public Safety Officers. Ensures that all posts and patrols are properly staffed and that all assigned personnel are conforming to the appropriate regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with local, state and federal crime reporting mandates
  • Establishes operational procedures and training activities such as: safety, fire prevention, traffic control, guarding and patrol of physical property; and incident and accident investigation.
  • Provides or facilitates orientation, training, and supervision of Public Safety personnel.
  • Confers with leadership and University partners to formulate policies, determine programmatic needs, and coordinate programs.
  • Partners with representatives of local government to ensure cooperation and coordination of activities with law enforcement and firefighting agencies.
  • Serves as liaison with both campus and off-campus representatives as the department’s point-person for Clery Act compliance, and other professional organizational compliance standards.
  • Prepares and implements training and policy/procedural manuals.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of personnel in revising or updating security measures due to new or revised regulations.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and if necessary, disciplines staff.
  • Develops and maintains excellent working relationships with students, faculty, staff and external customers/constituents.
  • Assists in training and advising Residence Life staff on parking, safety, security, and emergency procedures.
  • Meets with student government and other student organizations/groups as requested on issues of safety and security.
  • Coordinates emergency maintenance and environmental services needs with appropriate personnel during evening and weekends.
  • Ensures the availability and proper use of equipment, technology, supplies, and materials.
  • Stays abreast of changes in in directives, policies, regulations, etc. and advise personnel of necessary adjustments.
  • Assigns and documents the distribution of equipment.
  • Provides oversight of the key control program, access control system and surveillance equipment for all academic and administrative buildings.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with a diverse community of students, employees, visitors, and guests.
  • Performs Public Safety Officer duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree with five years of supervisory experience in public safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience. NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one within six months of hire. May need to cover evening and weekend shifts to ensure coverage. The position is designated as essential and must work as required during adverse weather and emergency closings.
Preferred Qualifications:
7-10 years of experience with public safety or policing in a higher education environment.
