Purpose of Department:
The Office of Academic Affairs provides leadership and services to promote academic excellence and student success. Committed to the undergraduate liberal arts tradition, Academic Affairs prepares students from diverse backgrounds to excel through rigorous interdisciplinary inquiry and immersive learning. We support a student-centered approach among our faculty and staff.
Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs (AVPAA), the inaugural Dean of Student Success will provide strategic, student-centered leadership for the institution’s student success initiatives. The Dean will oversee areas within the Center for Student Success (CSS) including Academic and Career Advising, Academic Support Services, and First-Year Experience and Retention, will lead a collaborative team in the development and implementation of institution-wide student success vision and strategy, and will provide direct student services and support as needed.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty with or without accommodation. These functions and tasks are essential for the position to provide required services.
  • Provide vision and strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and assessment of programs, policies, and procedures related to student success.
  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of professional staff responsible for various aspects of student success, including academic advising, career services, academic support, and first-year experience and retention with an intentional emphasis on integrating student success initiatives to strengthen the services and support offered to students.
  • Facilitate cross-training opportunities within the CSS to best support students.
  • Directly engage with and be available to students to provide support and assistance and serve as point of contact for escalated student issues.
  • Lead the development of innovative new programs, initiatives, and partnerships related to student success.
  • In collaboration with AVPAA and Director of FYE and Retention, lead the strategy and implementation of university-wide retention efforts.
  • Develop strong relationships across university divisions (e.g., faculty, senior leadership team, immersive learning, student life, financial aid) and facilitate collaboration to ensure comprehensive engagement in student success work.
  • In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Career Development and Internships, develop and foster strategic relationships and partnerships with employers to increase internship and employment opportunities for students and alumni.
  • Collaborate with School of Professional Studies (SPS) leaders to support the success of SPS students.
  • Advance University diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts with a particular focus on student success.
  • Collaborate with the Professional Development Seminar Faculty Program Director regarding course curriculum and evaluation, including training and support for faculty teaching the seminars.
  • In collaboration with the Director of Academic Support Services, enhance strategies related to academic progression and success.
  • Serve as a resource to faculty, staff, and students regarding curriculum, transfer credit, academic policies, and graduation requirements.
  • Develop and manage budgets.
  • Serve on relevant committees as assigned.
  • Work effectively with a diverse population of employees, students, visitors, and guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree.
  • At least seven years of experience in higher education with at least two years serving in a leadership/supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated effective, collaborative, and student-centered leadership.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and experience working with diverse learners.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student success, retention, advising, and career development.
  • Experience leading or directing a breadth of student success initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree.
  • Experience writing/managing grants especially related to funding sources for student success (e.g., TRIO SSS).
