Department: Public Safety
Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety’s mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
The Public Safety Officer provides personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the University’s campus. The Officer provides basic public assistance services as needed and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within assigned area. Officers are expected to remain alert to emergency situations, provide first-line responses, and enforce procedural rules and regulations.

We are currently recruiting for the following Full-Time shifts:
11am – 7pm - Sun-Thurs
7am – 3pm - Fri-Tues
3pm – 11pm - Sat-Weds
3pm – 11pm - Fri-Tues
11pm – 7am - Fri-Tues

Essential duties and responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Patrols assigned area on foot, to ensure personnel, building, and equipment security.
  • Checks ID cards of people entering facilities. Denies entry to persons who cannot show either proper identification, or cause for being admitted. Provides information and directions. Explains rules and regulations.
  • Maintains logs and records of occurrences, completes necessary paperwork, and uses computer terminal to input and retrieve data.
  • Examines doors and windows, to ensure security; locks and unlocks numerous buildings on campus; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
  • Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes and admitting requirements.
  • Watches for and, investigates and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or EMS, as required.
  • Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons; approach suspicious persons and notify police accordingly; confront and detain violators, as required, until police arrive.
  • Performs periodic checks of campus lighting conditions to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas to provide public security and assistance.
  • Prepares routine, standardized reports.
  • Monitors and authorizes entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  • Deals politely and courteously with a diverse campus population in a professional manner.
  • Routinely provides escort service to staff and visitors.
  • Delivers materials to offices as needed.
  • Provides motor vehicle assistance to staff and or visitors.
  • Responds to all alarm activations and investigates cause.
  • Assists in conducting fire drills within the University.
  • Responsible for enforcing all parking regulations and traffic control.
  • Responsible for the collection of lost and found items and producing the proper documentation and location of the owner of property when possible.
  • Works collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population of students, employees, visitors, and guests.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma and three years of related experience in public safety. Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and good driving record. Must successfully pass a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Public Safety experience in a higher education setting.
