Department: Public Safety
Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety’s mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
The Assistant Director of Public Safety plays a crucial role as second-in-command, supporting the Director of Public Safety in the supervision and oversight of the department. This position is not just about management, but about ensuring the safety and security of our campus community. The Assistant Director serves as a management representative for disseminating policy and operational directives, and as a first-line supervisor to ensure that policy and management decisions are carried out. Under the Director’s guidance, safety and security services are delivered, including thorough investigation of incidents and accurate handling of confidential information. The Assistant Director of Public Safety is an ambassador in the campus community, promoting and delivering positive community service and relations. This position is being hired for the 2025-26 Fiscal Year and beyond and will start no earlier than July 1, 2025.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
As a key member of the Public Safety team, the Assistant Director of Public Safety, reporting to the Director, is entrusted with a range of leadership responsibilities. These include but are not limited to:

● Patrol campus property to discourage, detect, and prevent crime, accidents, and general infractions of law.
● Conducts building and office security checks and handles any unusual situations that may result, including those that require police intervention.
● Conducts investigations of illegal or suspicious activities at the University and submits reports.
● Reviews Public Safety Officer reports for style, content, and accuracy.
● Responds to emergency calls and situations.
● Acts as liaison between Officers, University leadership, and local law enforcement agencies in cases investigated on campus.
● Develops the duty schedule, ensures that shifts are adequately staffed, including coverage at special events, and approves biweekly payroll.
● Reviews and investigates citizen concerns and complaints.
● Reviews statistical reports and assesses results; prepares activity and other reports.
● Assists in developing the departmental budget; forecasts the need for additional funds; projects needs and recommends equipment purchase.
● Acts as Incident Commander in the absence of the Director.
● Serves on campus committees.
● Works collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population of students, employees, visitors, and guests.
● Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Supervises direct reports and participates in developing work plans and schedules and supervises employees in daily operations.
● Partners with the Director of Public Safety in monitoring work and evaluating personnel performance.
● Participates in personnel hiring and provides or coordinates training; works with employees to correct deficiencies; and implements discipline procedures.
Minimum Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree with three years of supervisory experience in public safety or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
● Must have a valid North Carolina driver’s license or ability to obtain one immediately and an acceptable driving record.
● Current CPR and First Aid Certificates.
● Good working knowledge of law enforcement/security methods and investigative procedures and familiarity with Clery Act regulations/procedures.
● Must be available to work assigned shifts, including filling in if needed at night or on the weekend.
● Excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal, and communication skills.
● Solid experience with Microsoft Office suite.
● Ability to maintain confidentiality.

The position is designated as essential and must work during adverse weather and emergency

● Experience in a higher education environment.
