Department: Public Safety
Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety at William Peace University mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
The Public Safety Shift Supervisor oversees daily shift operations within the Department of Public Safety, ensuring a safe and secure campus environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. This role provides frontline leadership, supervises Public Safety Officers, and ensures the consistent application of policies, procedures, and emergency response protocols.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Public Safety, the individual holding this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Serves as the lead officer and primary point of contact for the assigned shift, directing officers and delegating tasks
  • Conduct roll call briefings, assign posts, and communicate priorities
  • Monitor officer activity for productivity, professionalism, and compliance
  • Provide real-time coaching, guidance, and corrective direction as needed
  • Ensure proper staffing levels and adjust assignments based on campus needs
  • Oversee patrol operations (foot, vehicle, and fixed posts)
  • Ensure visibility and proactive engagement across campus
  • Monitor access control, alarms, cameras, and emergency systems
  • Respond to and oversee all major incidents and calls for service
  • Act as the on-scene supervisor for critical incidents
  • Coordinate response efforts until relieved by senior leadership or external agencies. Know when to appropriately escalate.
  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of all incidents
  • Serve as liaison with local law enforcement, fire, and EMS when necessary
  • Mentor and develop Public Safety Officers
  • Assist with onboarding and field training of new hires
  • Reinforce department standards, procedures, and customer service expectations
  • Identify performance gaps and recommend additional training
  • Review and approve incident reports for accuracy and completeness
  • Prepare shift summaries and communicate key updates to leadership
  • Track and report safety trends, concerns, and operational issues
  • Promote a service-oriented approach to campus safety
  • Ensure positive, professional interactions with campus community members
  • De-escalate conflicts and support a welcoming campus environment
  • Enforce university policies, regulations, and applicable laws
  • Ensure adherence to Clery Act reporting requirements and campus safety standards
  • Maintain accountability for officer conduct and departmental expectations
  • Perform other Public Safety job-related duties and projects assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3–5 years of experience in campus safety, security, or law enforcement
  • Demonstrated leadership or supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of emergency response procedures and incident management
  • Excellent communication, report writing, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to make sound decisions under pressure
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and good driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education/public safety environment
  • Prior supervisory or lead officer experience
  • Familiarity with Clery Act and campus safety compliance standards
  • Certifications in CPR/AED, First Aid, or emergency management (e.g., ICS/NIMS)
