Purpose of Department:
The Office of Public Safety at William Peace University mission is to create and maintain a climate of security at William Peace University. A safe climate is necessary to enable the university to attract top students from around the world. It is also important to provide a safe and secure work and study environment that is free from concerns about crime and is conducive to the pursuit of a quality education. The public safety programs that are now in place were designed and implemented with this philosophy in mind.
Summary of Position:
The Public Safety Officer provides personal, equipment, and real property security for faculty, staff, students, and visitors within an assigned area of the University’s campus. The Public Safety Officer provides basic public assistance services as needed and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within the assigned area. Public Safety Officers are expected to remain alert to emergency situations, provide first-line responses, and enforce procedural rules and regulations.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Reporting to the Director of Public Safety the individual holding this position is responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

  • Patrols assigned area on foot, to ensure personnel, building, and equipment security.
  • Check ID cards of people entering facilities. Deny entry to persons who cannot show either proper identification, or cause for being admitted. Provide information and directions. Explain rules and regulations.
  • Maintain logs and records of occurrences, complete necessary paperwork, and may use computer terminal to input and retrieve data.
  • Examines doors and windows to ensure security; locks and unlocks numerous buildings on campus; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
  • Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
  • Maintain working knowledge of the locations of various departments, buildings, access routes and admitting requirements.
  • Watches for and, investigates and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as police, fire, and/or EMS, as required.
  • Remain alert for the presence of unauthorized persons; approach suspicious persons and notify police; accordingly, confront and detain violators, as required, until police arrive.
  • Performs periodic checks of campus lighting conditions to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required.
  • Patrols and monitors assigned parking areas to provide public security and assistance.
  • Prepares routine, standardized reports.
  • Monitors and authorizes entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  • Deal politely and courteously with a diverse campus population in a professional manner.
  • Routinely provide escort service to staff and visitors.
  • Provide daily delivery of newspapers to Library
  • Provide motor vehicle assist to staff and or visitors (i.e. jump start vehicles)
  • Respond to all alarm activations and investigate cause

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma and three years of related experience in public safety.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • On- campus, in person with no possibility of remote work
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Public Safety experience in a higher education setting.
Hours per week: 16 hrs.| 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM | Sat-Sun or Sun-Mon
