Job Description
Academic Achievers (officially known as Student Support Services) is a federally funded TRIO program that serves first-generation, low-income, and disabled students. All services provided to AAP participants are incorporated into approved program objectives that meet retention and postsecondary school graduation goals.

The AAP Educational Advisor would be responsible for collecting and disseminating educational information to assist in acclimating students with services in order for retention and success as upperclassmen towards postsecondary graduation and beyond. The Advisor will assist in the planning of the program and its’ initiatives and will report to the TRIO Director. Additionally, the Advisor also provides active efforts and services for low-income and first-generation individuals who desire to complete their postsecondary education and prepare for education on the graduate level.

Responsibilities:
  • Identifying and recruiting low-income, first-generation students, or disabled students who qualify for AA.
  • Having an assigned caseload of the above participants (numbers will vary).
  • Assisting in the recruitment of all participants no later than January 31st of each grant year.
  • Assist Director on important, time-sensitive business, and in overseeing and assisting staff with institutional and programmatic goals and objectives;
  • Meet with Director as needed to track progress.
  • Follow academic progress of all AA participants in order to design the Program to give assistance where necessary;
  • Giving verbal and /or visual presentations on AA and TRIO.
  • Rendering academic and personal counseling to all participants.
  • Refer participants for tutorial assistance.
  • Assist in creating a variety of workshops for participants including but not limited to career, college life, careers, personal development, study skills, business and personal etiquette, financial aid, and course selection.
  • Adopting outside agencies to assist with providing services to participants
  • Instruct a Freshman Studies course introducing new students to the history of Saint Augustine’s College and tools to assist in their transition from high school to college.
  • Assist the Office of First Year Experience with orientation meetings for students, parents and faculty. During the meeting coordinate and plan mandatory assemblies, seminars, and workshops that first year/transfer students must attend.
  • Assist in the completion of the Annual Performance Report (data and narrative);
  • Responsible for working diligently, with possible assistance to the First Year Experience Program, and the office of Enrollment Management in developing specific efforts and initiatives to improve the first-year student retention rate
  • Operating program software in order to document services and format reports Travel to various locations for professional development in order to perform adequate job duties·
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree;
  • Comparable proven experience working with low income, first generation, traditionally underrepresented and/or disabled students; ·
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Experience in a higher education setting, providing advising services or counseling to students who are educationally, economically, and otherwise disadvantaged.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred in Education, Counseling or related field
Physical Demands
  • Occasional need to lift at least 20 pounds;
  • Frequent need for oral, written and auditory communication;
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license;
  • Valid North Carolina Vehicle Registration;
  • Must be willing to travel geographically within the designated target area on a regular basis;
  • Occasional need for travel; and
  • Ability to work in fast paced and/or sometimes stressful situations.
